Alder Lines

Pale groves of alder trees
flash along the highway
against the dark woods –
spotted with winter moss
and hardly a bud on their branches,
completely exposed
in this unexpected
light.

There is something
we are missing
between those slender trunks.

But we can’t slow down
or stop.
And I can’t explain why
I feel we must.
Even if I did,
even if we did,
I can’t be sure.

That is the weight
of the ways we
attempt
to name and define
the things we see.

We take the chance
they are only
the things we see.
